Toptal Multimedia Designers

Have you ever tried going out and trying to compete on one of those conventional freelancing websites? It's a nightmare.  So many people think that art and design doesn't take any real training and that they can do our jobs without knowing the first thing about them. You end up with all these posers who have no actual experience, often with a fake portfolio, fake resume and fake references trying to underbid all the real professionals.  The everyone in the pool style freelance websites just don't work, and big name companies know that which is why they don't use them.

Enter Toptal Multimedia Designers.  They validate and rigorously screen every single applicant, and the big companies we all dream of doing work for know that.  The best part is you don't have to worry about competing with a bunch of fake posers muddying up the waters for everyone.  Check them out, I'm sure you'll be just as amazed as I am.

Dealing with Heart Wrenching Disappointment.

I recently applied to a masters program in Fashion Photography in NYC.  I've been trying to get into graduate school for a while but this time I actually got so far as an interview.  The Director of the department was very complimentary about my work, called me "a master of implied narrative".  I'd never really considered my photography skills lacking but my technical skills apparently are.

It makes sense that my technical skills would be lacking.  My undergrad program was black and white film exclusive, all my color and digital skills are mainly self taught.  Still it completely knocked the wind out of my ego to hear someone in such a position of authority tell me as such.  I suppose that's what my friends meant by not commercial enough.

So I heard back officially and I definitely did not get in.  I'd really been looking forward to being able to build an extremely well paying career that challenged me creatively within my field.

It's hard to hear but now I know what I need to do to improve my work and chances of getting into graduate school in the future.

I'll admit I cried, I knew in my gut it was coming but I still hoped for the best.  It's okay to cry privately till you feel better when things don't go as you'd hoped, on the condition that when you're done you take what you've learned, wipe your tears and chart a new course.  You can't ever let the people you hope to work with or compete against, see you cry or get upset.  It hurts like hell but you've just got to keep marching on.

Waiting to hear back about my future...

Well, I've bit the bullet and applied to the School of Visual Art in NYC for an MPS in Fashion Photography.  I missed the initial deadline so now it's just the rolling deadline.  Now I'm essentially just waiting to hear back about something that will hopefully drastically alter my life forever for the better.  This is hopefully afford me the career opportunities to make a real living as a photographer and be able to pursue my photographer with all my time and energy! I'm a skeptical atheist but I'll accept all the good luck, well wishes, positive vibes, and prayers you want to send my way.  I really hope I get in.

Interesting article.

I found this really interesting article on boing boing.  I'm not sure whether or not I agree with it 100% but I definitely think it's got some great ideas.  Its about how to learn new things and become better at the things we love to do.  I do think it's rather difficult to become great at something if you don't love it, as I've said before, so much of what talent "IS" is the degree to which something is able to hold your attention and motivate your actions.  The rest of the idea are hit or miss depending on individual circumstance I think, but maybe you'll disagree with me.

Your health and your creative block...

I learned recently that highly creative people have a higher than average sex drive and that sex helps increase creative flow.  People often forget, that just look food water and sleep, your body needs sex.  When I mean your body needs sex I don't necessarily mean with another person, that comes with its own advantages and disadvantages.  Consider this, stress levels have been intimately linked to prostate cancer.  Men who don't masturbate only a daily basis, even those that are receiving sex daily with a partner, are at a 40% high risk for developing prostate cancer.  Having time alone privately when you can simply be with yourself, listen to your body, and meets its needs for pleasure and release, great increases your overall health and well being.  Having sex with a partner can be nice because it is a very direct physical expression of affection and closeness, and the animal part of our brain responds much more to directly observable actions than to words and implied ideas or feelings.
If you're feeling creatively blocked, go through this checklist.  When was the last time I ate? Have I had some sort of substantial protein in the last two hours? How much water have I had to drink today? Am I feeling thirsty? Am I constipated or having other issues with my digestion? How much sleep did I get last night? How well did I sleep? How many hours have I been awake? Am I nearing 16 hours since I got any sleep? Am I feeling cranky or emotional? Could I use a nap? Is there something I'm upset about, consciously or unconsciously that I'm leaving unresolved? Am I feeling lonely or needing to be touched? When was the last time someone held me or gave me a hug? When was the last time I got a chance to socialize with people that I enjoy who don't stress me out? When was the last time I got out of the house just on my own to do something that refilled my creative well with awe and wonder? When was the last time I really made love with a partner? When was the last time I had an orgasm entirely on my own when I could simply be by myself, unrushed? When was the last time I simply sat in a quiet room alone with my thoughts, possibly drinking a cup of tea? When was the last time I got some sort of aerobic exercise I enjoy that really stretched my muscles and helped me burn some stress out of my body? When was the last time I tidied my work space so that it gave me that feeling I thrive on in my personal work? When was the last time I did something altruistic that made me feel better about myself? When was the last time I was pampered to help me relax? Have I been spending too much time thinking and stressing about my work and not enough time creating?

When you complete that list, I guarantee that you'll feel much better and the gears that pump out your creative juices will be properly lubricated, ready to take on whatever project lays in front of you.

Wait... I could actually make enough money to make art?!?

So hey everyone.  I just by chance happened to stumble across this amazing website, Patreon.  Instead of being like kickstarter where its all for a single big project and its lots of money, its you contributing a couple dollars each time I produce a new work, like a tip, to support me for creating work that you like or are into.  The great thing about this is that I'd be able to move out of my parent's house and get myself a little place I can make more art and write more and, and.... DO STUFF!

I find the entire concept pretty brilliant.  What's really great is that you can tell the website to not tip me over a certain amount per month so that you never have to worry about going over budget.  Its really exciting and it allows me an opportunity to create some of the more non commercial works I've been interested in for a while.  To quote the title of one of my favorite books "Make Art, Make Money", as in make amazing art and get it to make the money for you.  Hurray for the gift economy!

So I'm going to start producing a whole heck of a lot more art and posting a lot more writing on here, and you can all benefit from the fruits of my labor.  I'm so excited and I really hope my loyal fans will support me.

LifeNaut

So I found out about this really cool website called LifeNaut. Its run by the leading company in the field of AI.  The concept is that they are attempting to make a digital copy of your mind which will eventually be able to be loaded into an android and someday in the future into a clone of your own body.  Now I personally don't feel that even a clone of myself with an exact copy of my mind, is the same thing as "me", because I view myself as being the sense of awareness that looks out and views my memories and the world around me, the ghost in the machine.  I do think though that creating a digital copy of myself could be useful for completing my own goals which will take a very long time to bring to fruition, such as a Queer Home State and space exploration.  I especially like the idea because it might mean that some part of me, my son if you will, would get to experience a future period in time where we're able to custom terraform planets and engineer their ecosystems as works of art, a great dream of mine.  If I don't live long enough to see the day where we're able to use medical nanites to make ourselves immortal, hopefully someday in the future, a person much like myself though hopefully much better, will be able to continue making the world a better place as I hope and even enjoy the fruits of my labors.

Invisible

Shattered and broken
Fragmented Mirror in the sand
Empty
My fingers reach out
They touch only glass
No eyes staring out to meet my own
The blue sky stares up straight through me
The world sees only light and all things in contrast to it
I have become shadow
Chimeric
Ersatz
Ephemeral
...gone

Trying to talk ourselves out of what we already know

No matter how much we tell ourselves that we don't know what it is that we really want to do, we all in fact, at least as adults who have had a chance to sample what life has to offer, know exactly what we want.  The thing we want to do with our lives is usually the thing we spend the most time trying to talk ourselves out of.  We try to convince ourselves to follow another dream, and very often we do for a long time till we realize the mistake.  If we fail at something that we don't really give a damn about, it doesn't matter because we've never really risked anything.  To go after the thing most dear to our hearts and be told we're no good at it, that is a wound which is all too true.

As adults, we have learned to protect our hearts, to do everything we can to avoid serious emotional injury.  The danger with following the dream dearest to us is that to really do it authentically is to make oneself vulnerable.  The Id and the Super Ego both want to discover and express this dream but the Ego will do everything it can to deceive us and protect us from what it perceives as a fatal threat.  Even so the Ego can not hide the enjoyment we receive when we are fulfilling this secret desire, though it will still try to lie to us, often by trying to find this we like ALMOST as much but that we don't really care about.

So how do you figure out what it is you really want to do with your life? I've been studying this question in depth for a while now.  Here's a list of questions and quotes gathered from and inspired by sources wiser than myself.  If you're having difficulty finding your path in life, try asking yourself these questions, and remember, you're not allowed to edit or criticize yourself.  Gift to yourself the permission to "be stupid and ridiculous" because any attempt to edit is your ego trying to throw yourself off the scent of your path.

1. On his nightly television show George Lopez said (and I'm paraphrasing) "Your calling will be the thing you do the best with the least amount of effort."  The truth of it is that the reason that it seems to be the least amount of effort is you enjoy what you're doing so much you often don't realize how much time, energy and work you've put into doing that special thing because its a labor of love.  Think about when you were a little kid (or heck even now), the small amount of time and effort it takes to take out the trash seemed the greatest burden in the world, but the countless hours, blood, sweat and broken bones you gladly sacrificed in the summer to build a tree house or a fort was no trouble at all.  What do you do exceptionally well but seems to take no effort at all?

2. Revisiting the previous question, Joseph Campbell was quoted as saying that people completely misunderstood him when he told them to follow their bliss.  Many people have come to think that he meant you should do the thing which made you "happy" or was fun, they had come at Campbell's theory of bliss with an entirely superficial perspective of immediate gratification.  Campbell was later quoted as saying, "I should have told them to follow their blisters".  Campbell believed one's "calling", was not the thing that made you superficially happy, indeed when you're doing something that really matters to you it can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety.  Campbell believed one's "calling" was the thing which gives us a sense of fulfillment.  Studies have shown that the most difficult and grueling jobs on the planet are also the ones with the highest recorded job satisfaction.  This is not because a job has to be difficult in order for it to be fulfilling but because the jobs were so difficult there was no way anyone would last in them unless it was where they were really meant to be.  What is the thing that you spend countless hours at, that you don't even mind or notice when your hands are bleeding and covered in blisters? What is the thing you can't walk away from until you know it's been done right?

3. Forbes magazine recently suggested that one way for their readers to figure out what it is they really want to do is to ask themselves, "If money were no object, if you never had to worry about money again and you had enough money to do or create anything you wanted, what would you do?"

Three seemingly simple questions that when put together paint a much large picture of who you are as a person.  When you're really allowing yourself to be free and honest with yourself, do your answers ring out together into a unified answer?
I'm lucky in that I've figured out mine do.  Its not an easy path, and one I've been trying to dissuade myself from for decades but my path is that I'm a fine art photographer.  Its scary because it feels like that is something that even within the art world is a hard sell but I'm going to make it work.

A book I would very strongly recommend to anyone in a creative field is "Make Art, Make Money".  Its all about the Jim Henson approach to living as an artist.

Update on Recent Events

Hey everyone, its been extremely long since I posted last so here's a brief update on what's been going on.  I don't believe that I mentioned I finished my very first script, "Familiars", I believe I did that in June or July just after I got the tattoo.  Its a pilot script for a urban fantasy action drama.  Sadly its got some real issues that I'm not quite sure how to fix and no one has shown any interest in it.  Its frustrating because people are getting too fixated on the dialogue in a certain scene, when my characters are in fact ignoring what's being said and a lot of the real emotional exchange happening is on the nonverbal level.  The audience is supposed to be tuning out the rambling explanation of the cosmology of the show and just keeping a mental note of it for later but people who are reading my script say its not coming across and they lose interest and don't finish reading past that little piece of dialogue.

The great thing though is that finishing that script helped me a lot in my learning process towards screenwriting.  I'm actually working on a second script right now.  I haven't come up with a title yet but it'll come to me.  Right now I'm just at the point of making notecards of all the major plot points, I've got everything up to and including the threshold and I've got the ending.  Essentially all I've got left is the second act, which of course is always the most difficult. I think it will go well.  I've noticed I'm really drawn to writing girl power stories, or alternatively feminine power (self-empowered femme gay boys are super fun to write).  The script I'm writing is about a high school senior cheerleader who is forced to give up her favorite thing in the world, LARPing, or potentially lose a scholarship which is her only chance to pay for her dream school and get a degree in her favorite subject Computer Science.  I'm really enjoying the character and the material.

Ronove

Sit down and close your eyes for a minute. I want you to imagine the one thing you'd want if you could make any wish come true, you are not allowed to limit yourself based on logic, conventions of morality, plausibility or any other thing excuse about how it isn't possible. Don't try to call something to mind, just let the life you want, the life you could never admit to wishing for with every part of your deepest self, the thing you don't even allow yourself to want wish and dream for, let that secret desire float to the surface. Be as aware as you can of what that reality is. When you're ready open your eyes. Now, what would you give to make that your living reality? Quit getting in your own way and make it happen, no matter the cost.

With this in mind, I've decided to get a tattoo today.  I'll post pictures of it later but its essentially an artistic reinterpretation of the image below, the sigil of Ronove.  Ronove is a goetic demon who according to occult sources, gains his power and notoriety in hell, by showing off how culturally influential he is.  Part of this is by taking select artists who devote themselves to summoning him, and ushering them to the very top epsilons of society, helping them find both fame and fortune within their medium.

While I personally identify as a non-deistic animist and see Ronove as an archetype from the collective unconscious, the tattoo for me is a symbol.  It represents for me that I'm willing to cash it all in.  The idea being I'm permanently and indelibly marking myself, willing to condemn myself to any sort of infernal damnation in the theoretical afterlife, if it means that I will achieve the success I'm after.  I am willing to do ANYTHING to achieve my goals, and that's why I know that eventually I WILL achieve them.

The moment you draw a line in the sand and say the minute I reach this line, I'm going to stop and quit and move in another direction, is the minute you set yourself up for failure.  I've chosen to be homeless before for the chance to better my career, when I was younger I really had that fire and commitment to make it, up until I started drawing lines in the sand.  No more lines, I will make it or I will keep trying till they drag me to hell.

For Christmas

So totally awesome! My parents were nice enough to pay for a year's subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud and Team Treehouse for an entire year.  Besides the fact that when I'm all done completing the program I should finally be able to get a job, I'll also finally be able to give making phone apps as art a try.  I'm super excited.

Well I'm attempting to continue my series from my bfa show.  Its been a rough start but I only started working on this piece today.  It'll take a bit to get the rust out but I think its coming back to me.

Strange Week

Well, I was fired from my job subbing at a catholic school for really asinine reasons (essentially people playing games), but it was likely all for the best.  I went to the Affordable Art Fair in Seattle and possibly found some gallery representation.  So right now I'm working on continuing my series from my bfa show and doing a piece for the Nightmare Before Christmas show.

I'm also going back to finishing my vision board.  I'd still really like to go to Yale for my MFA in Photography.

Working on a Call for Art

So my friend Braden is curating a show at a store in Seattle called Other Worlds.  The show is supposed to inspired by Tim Burton with a focus on The Nightmare Before Christmas and other worlds at Christmas.  I'm going to do some scratchboard art for the show.  I'm picturing the ghost of a little boy alone in the woods holding a present, not far from his skeleton, where he got lost going to a christmas party.  Maybe something else, we'll see.

Really Cool Art Escape

So I've found something I want to buy myself if I've ever got the money.  I'm sure my money would be better spent saving for New York but this would be pretty amazing to do.  Its a one month artist residency (the kind you just sign up and pay for rather than winning based on talent and hard work) specifically in photography. You can check it out here.  Full facilities and all of your equipment and materials costs are included in the cost.  The only thing that scares me is I'm terrified of snakes and its in India.  I'm still going to go eventually but it will take me a while to save the money.

But an expert at what?

So I found this really interesting website online called "Expertory".  Its this online website where you can do consulting and teach classes online.  You post a class that you're willing to teach, the length and how much it costs and people can then book your class.  Its pretty interesting.  There's already like 10 crappy introduction to photography classes, so that won't work.  So I've been thinking about ideas for classes:

1. Converting my idea for a 12 week class on nude and erotic photography into video lectures where I give an assignment at the end, they have my email to ask questions, the student then does the assignment and emails it to me, then we review it together over a webcam session.

2. How to come out of the closet.  How to do it while minimizing the potential risks to your physical person and how to do it in a fun way.

3. Consulting people on how to throw a rave style party

4. How to cook with marijuana

5. How to find people to be friends with

6. Consulting people on how to have an adventure

7. How to plan a road trip.

What else you I try putting up?

I'll keep dreaming

Well I decided to post my resume on the New York City Craigslist.  I figure there's always a chance I might get a full on bite.  Unfortunately I can't afford to travel cross country for a little nibble at the line again.  It really sucks that I'm missing the Hassleblad photo conference in New York today.  I keep getting asked for a business card so I finally designed one that I actually like.  I've got the design saved online and I'll buy some as soon as I get my pay check.  Sitting here and sending my creative energy out into the universe, its a nice ritual for myself.  Even if nobody is reading this now, maybe they'll use excerpts from my blog in my eulogy, I hope there's some piece of deep wisdom they can extract from here.  I feel like I keep saying the same things over and over again but I don't actually get anywhere.  I'll figure it out eventually.
